Chevrolet Repair: Impala 2000 - Air Conditioner not working, compressor clutch, coolant

Question
The car had to sit for over a year.  It has been running for over months.

When summer came, I tried the a/c, and it did not blow out cold.  I took it in for servicing, and they filled with coolant, and check for leaks.  No leaks.  The air still did not blow cold, so I took it back in, and they said it was still full.

Any help what could be stopping the compressor?  From what I can gather, the 'clutch' on the compressor does not engage, so I thought either a relay/fuse or switch.  I have checked out all the relay/fuses under the hood, and even the fuse wire to the compressor.  All appear good.  So now I am thinking switch.

A little history:  When the a/c did work, the dial that switches from blowing out the front vents, to the feet area and to select defrost sometimes would not switch correctly.  If it was on blowing out the feet, and I would turn the dial to blow out the vents, it would not switch.  Eventually, it would change, possibly after I started/stop car.

Any help you can give would be appreciated.  I do not have the $1000 for a new compressor!

Thanks!

Bill

Answer
Hi Bill, You don't need a new compressor if there isn't any power to it. Without power to the compressor clutch it won't engage. I think your problem is the control head in the dash. You already said you had a problem with the vents not working correctly so I would start there.I have replaced a few of these also.
