Chevrolet Repair: Chevy Celebrity will not start when Hot, chevy celebrity, dead battery

Question
I have a 87 Celebrity and occasionally when the Engine is hot the car will not start. It will not even turn. Sounds like a dead battery, but after about 30 minutes of cool down it starts without a problem. Any ideas?

Thanks

Larry

Answer
Hello Larry,
If the starter is old, it could be heat soaking. Starter and solenoid replacement may be needed.

But first make sure 12 volts is getting to the small terminal on the solenoid when the switch is turned to start.

You could jump battery voltage to that terminal to test the starter in those conditions, but be careful, and make dead sure it is in neutral, since jumping there bypasses all safety switches.
