Chevrolet Repair: 1999 Tahoe - fan or electrical problem, resistor pack, jumper wire

Question
Seems to be a short in my fan blower switch that will come on at times, doesn't come on, stops/starts without touching switch.  Heard of problems w/GM blower fan, but how do you tell before beginning to switch out parts?

Similar issue w/sound to my stereo a few months back but now seems to work fine.

Thanks for your thoughts

Answer
Hello Earl,
Quite often, the problem is in the resistor pack. That is how different speeds are controlled.
But high speed doesn't use any resistors, so if it quits on all speeds except hi, I would check the resistor pack.
If it quits in hi also, then a loose wire connection is what i would suspect.
Check the wires at the blower motor itself.
be sure to check the ground wire also.
A bad switch is a possibility, but if it were bad, I would expect to be able to cause and cure the problem with minor wiggling of the switch when the problem occurrs.

There are also two relays that operate the blower, and loose connections there, as well as the fuse, could do the same thing.

Check all of those before replacing anything.

If the blower stops in high also, I would test the motor itself by running a jumper wire from the battery pos, directly to the blower motor connector, and then go for a ride. It will be running on hi, and if it quits then, you have eliminated everything else, leaving only the blower motor ground, and the blower motor itself.
