Chevrolet Repair: 94 s10 pickup, starter solenoid, knock sensor

Question
Where is the starter and how do you remove it.

Answer
Hello James,
The starter is under the passengers side of the engine, right in front of the transmission housing, and beside the oil pan.

First, unhook the battery.

Then, Jack the truck up, and BLOCK it up, and slide under there and remove two bolts that go up through the starter, and into the block. Hold that starter, and don't let it fall, because it will be pulling on the wires. They need to be disconnected from it, but it is almost impossible to do, until you are lowering the starter. Note where they go, and before replacing the starter, note the little tang sticking off the big battery cable, and the notch in the starter solenoid, that the tang MUST go into, or the plastic end of the solenoid will be broken when you tighten the nut.

There may be a gizmo in front of the starter, with a wire connected to it, that is screwed into the block. That would be the knock sensor, and squeeze the large part of that connector to unhook the wire from it, and get it out of the way of the starter.

If there is a heat shield above the starter, make sure you get it back into the proper place when reassembling, so it does its job, and so it doesn't fall down against the battery cable.

May also help to remove the right front tire, for some access thru that area.
