Towing Issues: accident, small claims court, tow trucks

Question
i got into a car accident on 295 south NJ and i was in the process of having mar car picked up by a friend!! And the cop would not let me have the car towed by my friend. So now i owe this tow company money for the tow and storage and i had no interest in letting them tow my truck is there anyway to contest this? i did not authorize this tow i had no say in where my vehicle went. Any information would be greatly appreciated

Answer
well in some areas of NJ the freeways are "bid zones" and only approved or the company with the contract is allowed to tow from that area... I also know that time to get tow trucks there is real important also as traffic flow is big problem up there..

BUT GENERALLY you are allowed to "owners request" for tows... And the police should honor the request..

Now as to contesting it and the charges, I am not sure how to do that other than small claims court. Generally the police do not have any provisions to reclaim the money but you can always check with the department about the "owners request" which was not honored. Not that it will do any good but they can see if things were not done correctly or according to department policy..
