Chevrolet Repair: 95 blazer heater core, backyard mechanic, haynes manual

Question
Van,
would it be unwise for a backyard mechanic with mediocre skills to try and tackle replacing a heater core?  From what I have read it is going to require the removal of the dash and steering column, are there any short cuts and/or tips you can give, or would you suggest that I not try this?  The core was leaking and the core was bypassed as they lived in Fl. at the time, now the vehicle is here in Michigan...
I am trying to do a favor for my nephew and don't want to end complicating things even more.
Thank you
Jack

Answer
Hi Jack,
I have a manual, and it says the dash removal is the only hard part, and that is because of all the hidden screws.
Go buy a Haynes manual, or go to the public library, refference section, and copy those pages from one of the many manuals they have.

I think you can do it. The Haynes gives a step-by-step on removing the dash.
