Chevrolet Repair: Odometer stopped working, vehicle speed sensor, wd 40

Question
Hi Thanks for the service you do. I have a 1988 C2500 with 350 and a 5speed. The other night I noticed the odometer wasn't working. The speedometer works fine. Does it work off the speedometer ?
Another ? Sometimes the turn signal freezes on both sides and sometimes it works fine. Doesn't flash fast like burned out bulb , but just stays on with no flash. Do you think flasher or bad ground , Left and right do it.
Thanks again Jason

Answer
Hello Jason,
Both the speedometer, and the odometer use the same signal from the transmission vehicle speed sensor unit, so if the speedometer is working, that part is ok.
I have had a few of those odometers quit. They are actually mechanical, and I took one cluster apart and hosed the odometer down with WD-40.

It worked again for about six monthst, and I never got it to move again.
Chevy parts department that I deal with all the time said to bring the instrument cluster in, and they send them off to be repaired. Said it takes about a week.
The truck will run fine with the cluster removed.

As for the signals, that does sound like the flasher since it does it in both directions.
I think that has an electronic flasher....slightly more expensive than just a plain old flasher, but won't work with a plain one.
