Chevrolet Repair: Location of backup light switch on 79 Chevy half-ton van, neutral safety switch, floor shift

Question
Hello Van,

I saw this back-n-forth somewhere on this site, but doesn't
quite answer my prob.

There's an open in my backup light switch.  Bulbs check ok.
Trouble is, I can't find where the switch is located when I move
the tranny shifter lever to "R".  It's not on the tranny; I've looked.

There's an electrical connection junction on the steering column
two-thirds of the way down, which I replaced about two years
ago, but I was trying to fix a problem of the engine starting
while transmission in neutral (replacing this part did NOT fix
that problem, which is another thing I gotta get going on before
I kill somebody starting in Drive).

I believe the backup switch is inside the top of the steering
column.  Do I have to pull the steering wheel to access/replace
the switch?  All the cheap manuals I have aren't specific enough
about the location of this switch.

Would appreciate your help~~Thanks

Question
1988 3/4 Ton Suburban backup lights do no go off, could it be
the switch? If so, where is it located and how do I check it and/or
replace it? Is it a parts store item or dealer?

Answer
In most cases it is the switch that is stuck. On automatic
transmission vehicles that have the shift lever on the steering
column the switch is usually located mounted on the steering
column under the dash. Some have them mounted on the
transmission and some have them mounted at the gear shift
lever assembly if it is a floor shift.

Depending upon your transmission type AUTO or STANDARD
and on the steering COLUMN or a FLOOR SHIFT determines
WHERE the switch is located.

Answer
Hi Steve,
That same switch, the neutral safety switch, is also going to be your backup light switch.
It is NOT under the steering wheel. It is on the steering column above the brake pedal.
It is also somewhat adjustable, which just might cure both problems.

Go to this link.   http://www.chevyasylum.com/column/tiltcol.html
It is intended to help repair a loose tilt column joint, but if I remember right, it shows that switch, and they are mostly pretty much like that.
