Chevrolet Repair: 92 astro ignition switch, neutral safety switch, wheel shaft

Question
Van,
Thank you for your prompt response.  It's a 91 by the way. I don't know why I put 92.  The van won't start.  The starter has been checked out. When I turn the ignition key to start nothing happens.  I've verified that 12v are going to the starter, but could not check the solenoid.  It is very difficult to get to the solenoid connection.  I may have to pull the starter back out to check it.  All the people I've talked to and internet research I've done points to the switch.  With my luck, that's probably not the problem.  I've removed everything from the column that looks like it would hold it up and it still won't drop.  It appears that its rigidly mounted to the firewall and all the components are slid over the steering wheel shaft itself.  This may be beyond my capabilities.  -------------------------

I need to replace the ignition switch in my 1992 chevy astro.  The Haynes manual is pretty confusing.  How do I lower the steering column to get at the switch which is on top of the column under the dash?  Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you.

Hi Jason,
About level with your knees as you sit in the drivers seat, there are some panels below the steering column that can be removed. Then there is a couple bolts coming down beside the column, that hold the column to the bottom of the dash.
Remove the bolts, or maybe nuts, and allow the steering wheel to drop toward the seat.
The switch is sitting on the column down there, and connected to the key tumbler by a rod.
The switch mount screws allow it to be adjusted a little also, which might be the cause of your problem. You didn't say why you need to replace it.

Answer
Hi Jason,
There is also a neutral safety switch that the starter signal goes through, that must be working. Try shifting the shift lever to neutral, rather than Park, and see if it will start there. Press the brake pedal with the key in on, and you should be able to shift the lever. Then while holding the key in start, wiggle the shift lever.

I would sure try to get a test light connected to the starter solenoid wire, and see if power is getting there before going to the steering column trouble.
