Chevrolet Repair: burning oil, monte carlo ss, piston rings

Question
I have a 1984 monte carlo ss it has no emission parts or computer(ECM) nor cats.Just a rebuilt 350 4bbl.Heres my problem, when I go to start my car when cold its fine it starts instantly. when driving at normal temp and i turn it off then turn it on again it will start perfect. But when I go to start it about 15 mins after cooling down from normal temp while its still warm. it take about 10 rotations and alot of pumping gas then when it starts I have to keep pumping the gas and all kinds of blue smoke comes out of the tailpipes also it sounds like it is missing on each rev this only lasts for about 10 seconds and its back it normal.it dosent burn so much to show on the dip stick I just want to know if it has to do with my rings or my valves.                     thanks for your help

Answer
BLUE smoke is caused by piston rings, NOT valves.

Here is a problem that I have seen many many many times over the years.

The 4 bbl carbs tend to leak fuel from the bottom of the fuel bowl after the engine has been driven and after it sits for a length of time.

try this:

1. When you know that you are going to have a hard time starting the engine after it has set for awhile after being warmed up, open the hood and remove the air cleaner and using a flashlight look down into the carb and pump the accelerator linkage 4 times from closed to wide open and see if you get a stream of gas from both jets ALL 4 TIMES.

What maybe happening is that the above said bowl is leaking gas into the intake manifold and washing the engine oil from the piston rings thus reducing your compression until such time that you keep cranking the engine enough to pump more oil into the piston ring grooves thus increasing your compression.

Another suspect is that you are losing ignition at this particular time. So next time when you know you are going to have a hard time starting the engine, Check for spark at the spark plugs while someone else tries to start the engine. It is highly possible that you are getting a weaker spark to the spark plugs due to a heat sensitive ignition coil, ignition module or a pickup coil within the distributor.

Another is normal gas perculation as where air bubbles are getting into the fuel system due to the hot temperatures.

let me know what you find out.
