Chevrolet Repair: 85 chevy celebrity distributor, camshaft position sensor, crankshaft sensor

Question
I have an 85 Chevy Celebrity 2.8 V6 MPFI auto trans.

Its distributor is different than ones I can find in repair books.  It has module, sensing coil, etc, and a lower fixed disc with six radiating upward extending fingers which evidently are to be brushed by a rotating disc (mounted on shaft immediately beneath the rotor) with six short downward extending fingers. Not cast, but formed from thin sheet metal.

This upper rotating disc sat on a bakelite or plastic mount which disintegrated, and I have made a replacement from some old Melemac plates. Due to the state of disintegration, I was unable to see how the assembly was originally supposed to work, and I assumed it was as described above, even though it makes little sense, as all six upper fingers would touch all six lower fingers at same time.

After putting it all back together so that upper rotating disc fingers contact lower fingers, 6 such contacts per engine revolution, I have no spark to any plug. I probably have the upper rotating fingers several degrees from the original position, which may put me out of synch with the camshaft position sensor.  I thought I could compensate for this by turning the distributor, but I can't find any such adjustment screw. The distributor and cap are fixed in place.

I would like to know how this assembly (upper and lower six-fingered discs) are supposed to work, and I would like to know if/how to fine-tune the distributor by turning it.

Many thanks in advance

Answer
What you are referring to is a HALL-EFFECT system. Trying to explain it would take hours.

It is NON-ADJUSTABLE as far as turning the distributor.

The timing sequence is determined by the CRANKSHAFT SENSOR.

On every occassion when this has happened it has bent and misaligned the lower plate and pickup pole sensor within the distributor and your only resolution is to replace the distributor as there are NO PUBLISHED adjustments for this type of repair and believe me I have tried.

Make sure that you check your sensors to make sure that they OHM out to specs.
