Chevrolet Repair: Clicking sound, ford taurus gl, example of a cv

Question
Hello,

My brother just bought a 1996 Ford Taurus GL with the 3.0 V6. I've tried asking this question with the Ford Allexperts, but no answers. When you pull the car forward, apply the brakes, and put it in reverse, and then give it some gas to  get it going, it makes a click click click sound, almost like plastic gears striping. It only does it 3-5 clicks and then goes fine. Also, going up a hill, it will do the same clicking when you give it enough to acceleration to get it to about 50MPH, the transmission upshifts, and it clicks again. Any ideas or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! --Seth

Answer
If this vehicle is a FRONT WHEEL DRIVE this sounds like a classic example of a CV-JOINT failure in one of the front axles and needs to be looked at NOW.

Look undr the vehicle as there are 2 JOINTS on EACH front axle and they are covered with a large rubber boot. If you find a TORN BOOT this would mean that dirt has destroyed the JOINT.
