Chevrolet Repair: frozen, floor shift, different gear

Question
my truck is in neutral, standard shift and it will not roll.I put it in first gear and it the engine revs and when I let the clutch out it dies. When I put it in reverse and let the clutch out, it dies.  In neurtral you can try and rock the truck and it won't move?

Answer
Hello Larry,
More information about the truck would help.

It sounds like a truck I used to have in my fleet. Chevy half ton, with column shift. The detent in the transmission would sometimes let the weight of the linkage shift one of the gears, and the shift lever wasn't engaged with that collar, so couldn't shift it to neutral. It would engage a different gear at the same time, and lock it up.

Try shifting to neutral with the lever, start the truck, and slowly release the clutch, and see if it happens to be in a gear already.

If it is a floor shift, the lever may have sliped out of a collar also.
