Chevrolet Repair: 1992 Chevy Pickup, erands, chevy pickup

Question
The truck is a 4x4 automatic, 5.0L w/160K mi. The fuel filter was replaced about 2 3 years ago.  I am having a problem starting the pickup.  If I drive for more than 30 minutes, then try to start it again w/in 2 hours, it cranks and cranks.  On 3rd or 4 try it will catch, sputter, & die.  Then a couple more cranks and it will start -- then get the rich gas smell like it was flooded. I live in MN, and was not as bad this winter -- it seems to get worse when warmer or humid.  Have changed plugs, plug wires, dist, and points.  30 minutes or more seems to be the magic number.  If running erands and have a hard starting episode, I seems to start fine the next time.  It also seems to be a little slugish accelorating between 20-40 mph.

thanks

Answer
Hi David,  The first thing I would do is replace that fuel filter now. If that doesn't help I would do is scan test it to see what the temp sensor for the computer is reading. If it reading too cold it will dump too much gas into the intake and will start hard. This sensor is right by the thermostat housing if you would like to just replace it. The other thing is the fuel pump..could be getting weak and not getting enough fuel to fire the engine. You could spray some carb cleaner into the throttle body to see if it will start after you spray it. If it does then your fuel pump could be weak.

Hope this helps
