I am helping a friend trouble shoot his 1988 Corvette. It is cutting out when he reaches 55 plus mph and when you let off the gas and push again it runs fine. We replaced the TPS and it helped a lot but the car continues to do the same thing but not as much. We read the computer and it reads clear. Could this be an EGR valve? We have replaced the ditrib cap, wires, plugs, fuel filter.
Answer -
You MUST determine if you have an ignition failure to the spark plugs or a fuel starvation problem FIRST.

The fuel system is new. Tank, lines, filter. The TPS is new and the car ran better after putting that in. The car does die when it is cold. The engine light was on but it gave a code of the TPS and a transmission problem. We cleared the compter and now it has no codes.
It is almost like a backfire in the manifold as the car is in overdrive right before it shifts down to 3rd to go up hills. The car still has lots of power and runs good once it is warm. I have the owner resetting the TPS to the specs of the car. I think that will solve the dieing problem. I just cannot figure out why it keep stuttering at the overdrive down shift. Have you ever seen this before?

If this vehicle has a standard distributor I am going out on a limb and suggesting that IF your problem is loss of ignition to th spark plugs then you probably have a problem with either the PICKUP COIL in the distributor or an ignition module failure.

If you have a fule problem than I would say you have a weak uel pump and or a fuel restriction.

the EGR is VERY remote possibility.

Does the CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ever illuminate on the dash and if so, what CODE(s) are you getting ?.

Answer
YES, I have seen his problem MNAY TIMES and there is not one cause that sticks out more than another.

WHAT was the transmission CODE ?.

Without actually having physical access to the vehicle the possibilities are endless.

We rarely work on corvettes as there is not to many out here in New Mexico.
