Chevrolet Repair: replacing electric choke, monte carlo ss, self tapping screws

Question
I have a 1984 Monte Carlo SS with a 4-barrel carb. My Chevy manual says that to replace the electric choke coil I need a special tool to support the bowl float and the throttle body. This dosen't make any sense to me . Is this true and do I really need a special tool? If this isn't true what are the directions for replacing the choke coil?

Answer
What the book is referring to is ONLY applicable when you havve to REMOVE the carb from the engine.

You can usually remove and replace the choke coil cover WITHOUT taking the carb OFF the engine.

You will most likely see that the coil cover is held on by 3 aluminum rivets that you can either drill out or using a small sharp chisel you can tap the heads off of the rivets and then use a small punch to push out the rivet bodies from the holes.

The new coil will come usually with new rivets, but you can purchase some small SELF-TAPPING screws that MIGHT come in the package along with the rivets to re-install the coil.

When you remove the coil make SURE that you take note IF there is a large round paper gasket that goes on the coil cover. If your vehicle has one on it install the new one. If it does NOT have one on it DO NOT put it on.
