Chevrolet Repair: 1985 Chevy spectrum starting problems, chevy spectrum, fuel filter

Question
Hi Van,

My daughter has a 1985 chevy spectrum. First off it always starts fine and she lets it warm for a few min. recently about every 3 days or so as she starts to drive away it dies. When it happened a few days ago I held the gas pedal down and cranked the engine until it finally started. It has been fine until this morning. Today she did as she always does and started to drive away and it died. I did the same thing as last time but it did not start. I opened up the air cleaner and looked to see if it was getting gas and it seemed to be. I am going to get a can of starter and spray in the carb to see if it starts, if it does I suspect that it is a clogged fuel filter and if it does not start what do you think it could be.

thanks for your help.

Answer
Hi Scott,
I expect it is just a need to adjust the choke.
it needs to close when cold, open a little just after starting, and open all the way when warm.
Some carb/PCV valve cleaner liberally sprayed all over and in the carb might fix it right up.
