Chevrolet Repair: 1994 S-10 4X4 with Vortec Engine overheating, blown head gasket, coolant loss

Question
Hi, my 1994 chevrolet S-10 4X4 with vortec engine is overheating, it runs great except for the this problem, I have checked the radiator and changed the thermostat, I changed the cat and the muffler, the check engine light is off, now I want to check if the engine timing is right, but I need to know what timing does the S-10 uses? or another idea why is it overheating?

Answer
Hi Vincent,
A fan clutch or fan motor, depending on weather it is belt driven or electric motor driven, can cause overheating.
Other possibilities are a bad water pump, internal plugging in the radiator, and a blown head gasket, but the latter will usually be accompanied with coolant loss without an apparent leak.
A slipping automatic transmission can also cause it, so check the fluid for signs of burnt smell.

The timing is electronically controlled, so that shouldn't be the cause.

And then, there is the possibility of the gauge being wrong.
