Chevrolet Repair: Saturn SL1 check engine warning, check engine soon light, saturn sl1

Question
Unfortunetly there are no Saturn specialists on this site so I'm hoping that you might be able to help me. The "Check Engine Soon" light has been coming on intermittingly for the past couple of weeks. It will stay on for about a day then stay off for two days, then repeat the cycle. I have noticed that if I remove the engine cap then replace it the light tends to go off. Other than that I have not noticed any patterns. I'm hoping that it might be the O2 sensor or a loose gas cap in order to avoid costly repairs with something I can fix myself.
Any suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks,

Rob

Answer
What is an ENGINE CAP ?.

There are up to some 50 possible faults that can cause the check engine light to come ON. One IS a loose fuel cap or the WRONG gas cap is on the vehicle. It usually takes 4 or 5 days for the fuel system to stabilize IF your problem IS a gas cap issue.

In order to find out what CODE(S) are being stored in the computer you will need a facility to perform the disgnostics.
