Chevrolet Repair: 1991 chevy corsica 3.1L, torque converter clutch, 1991 chevy corsica

Question
The motor runs fine and starts right up. But when I drive and hit 45 to 50 mph and slow down to stop at a light the car jumps and dies. I have to put it in neutral and it starts then I put it in drive it stalls.

Answer
OK, You have one of 2 possible problems that are very common:

1. The TCC (Torque Converter Clutch) solenoid within the transmission side cover is faulty and when it fails it does not allow the transmission to shift out of OVERDRIVE.

Feels like a standard transmission if when you come to a stop and forget to push in the clutch.

2. You have a BLACKISH WET buildup of residue surrounding the throttle plate area thus causing the throttle plate not to be able to CLOSE all the way. There are spray cleaners that you can buy at any auto parts store and simply access the throttle plate and spray the resdiue out from around the throttle plate.

My FIRST choice would be to unplug the 3 or 4 wire square electrical connector that plugs into the transmission where the transmission is mounted to the engine. This square electrical plug is usually located behind and below the drivers side haedlights being plugged into the transmission.

simply unplug it and go drive the vehicle and see if your problem is resolved. Do NOT be concerned IF the CHECK ENGINE light illuminates on the dash and also be aware that you will NOT have any over drive as long as this plug is unplugged.

Let me know.
