Chevrolet Repair: power steering noise, fluid contamination, oil thickness

Question
I have a 1996 Buick Century and a couple of days ago I started getting a high pitch whining type noise coming from the pwr steering unit. The fluid doesn't smell burnt but it feels a little on the motor oil thickness side. Is there anything I can do or does it need to be replaced?

Answer
Drain it out by removing the rubber return line at the pump. Refill it with the CORRECT TYPE of fluid, Run it for a day or two and replace the fluid again.

let me know.

In most cases the pump and steering components will have to be replaced due to the fluid contamination caused by an internal seal failure of the steering components of which the fluid flows thru.

However, If you catch it early enough, Changing the fluid as said above 2 or 3 times you may cure the problem before it gets worse.
