Motorcycle Repair: Clutch issue 1996 Heritage, clutch basket, clutch lever

Question
I bought a 1996 Heritage (FLSTC) that has 24k miles on it. There was very little play in the clutch and it was almost impossible to shift to neutral with the bike running. We adjusted the cable out a little and that helped with the play in the handle but it was still difficult to shift to neutral. Now after putting just a few hours on the bike the clutch is slipping. So I have  two questions. First, how do I tell if a new clutch is needed? Second, if a new clutch is not needed how do I correctly adjust the existing one? Thank you

Answer
harleys have always been known to be tough to find netural while running.
To tell if you need a new clutch you have to remove the clutch plates from the clutch basket and inspect them for wear. With only 24k miles I wouldnt suspect that you need new clutches.
to do your adjustment, first put some slack in the cable. Now, with the bike sitting upright, remove the derby cover. Behind it you will see the clutch adjuster. Loosen the locknut and turn the adjuster outward. Now slowly turn it inward, just until it bottoms out and then back out about 1/8 turn. Tighten the locknut and button it up. Now got to the cable and tighten it up so you have about 1/8 inch play in the clutch lever
Good luck and happy riding
