Chevrolet Repair: Battery, pep boys, charging system

Question
Hello,
I own a 1988 Chevy Berreta.Somehow my battery went down.So I hooked the battery charger up.I used the "quick start "setting on the charger and the car quickly started.
However, after a few miles of driving the car it died.
I tried to start it back only to discover the battery is down again!
When i got it home I hooked the charger back up and it shows It is 50% charged.
Is that why it went down so quickly?
How long should I let it charge?
Thank you for assisting me with this frustration.

Answer
Did you check to be sure that your charging system is fully operational ?.

How LONG to leave it on a battery charger depends upon the type of battery charger you have.

Some have an AUTOMATIC SHUT-OFF when the battery is fully charged the charger STOPS charging the battery and some do NOT.

i would suggest that you remove the battery from the vehicle and HAND CARRY it into any larger auto parts store such as AUTOZONE, CHECKERS, NAPA, PEP BOYS, etc and they will charge and test your battery usually for FREE.

If your alternator is easily removable from the vehicle, You can also take this in and have it tested as well.

If this is your ORIGINAL battery and or it is over 5 to 7 yaers old, Install a NEW one.

I replace my vehicles batteries every 5 years.
