Chevrolet Repair: Gear Selector, chevy conversion van, shift indicator

Hi - we have a 1995 Chevy conversion van (20) w/ a 4 speed automatic on the column.  The gear selector indicator is on the column also.

The small orange indicator inside the glass window has disappeared - broken off or fallen off.

To repair this condition, will the airbag and column need disassembled?  Is this as complex as it sounds?

What has happened is that there is a small wire that attaches to the shift indicator display and attaches to the steering column about level with your right knee as you are sitting in the vehicle. This wire has either broken at eiter end or has simply slipped off the attachment point at the steering column.
