Chevrolet Repair: starter problems, chevy truck, starter problems

Question
Hello,
I have an ongoing starter/electrical problem.
I have a 1970 Chevy truck.
Over the last few years, I have gone through like 4 starters.  When it starts going bad, it makes a horrendous grinding noise.  Could you give me some things to check on with the electrical system?

Answer
Hello Brian,
First, you need to remove the starter, mark the flywheel with chalk, or something, and then look at every tooth on the ring gear. I expect that you will find a place with some bad teeth.
You can sometimes dress the teeth up a little if you didn't wait too long.
But a ring gear may be needed.
Then there are shims for the starter, that may or may not be needed.
