Chevrolet Repair: Chevy Alternator & AC Compressor, chevy k1500, compressor clutch

Question
I recently replaced the A/C Compressor on my 1995 Chevy K1500. We have not charged the compressor yet because it is winter. Should the clutch kick in even though there is no coolant in the system? Also, the alternator and battery were replaced at the same time. The voltmeter gauge on the dash will not go above 10 volts and the dummy battery light is on all the time. The battery and alternator have been tested and are fine. The truck starts fine and runs fine, it doesn't seem like the battery is low at all. Why would the guage be reading incorrectly and what can we do about it?

Answer
Hello Ryan,
I would expect the compressor to not run. I would unhook the wires from the compressor clutch if it did run.
I would also recommend at least sucking a vacuum on the system, but wonder why you don't charge it, since it is supposed to work on defrost also, to dehumidify the air, and clear the windshield faster.

I assume you are using 134A, so why not just fill it?

I would wonder why the alternator was replaced, and if it is the correct one, since you have a gauge and a light.
It is a simple matter to use a volt meter on the battery before starting the engine, and then after, and see if the alternator is working.
Should show 12V then 14.5 or so.
