Chevrolet Repair: Valve lash adjustment on 88 chevy PU, compression stroke, head gaskets

Question
I have a 1988 Chevy Half ton 2 wheel drive 5.7 liter engine. I replace the head gaskets.

Question: When I adjust the valve lash is there a sequence to adjust these in (ie. TDC adjust #1 exhaust #, #1 intake, #3 exhaust,  then rotate engine 360 degrees then adjust #2 intake, #2 exhaust ect. ect. ect.)?

Also do You have to have the lifters primed to adjust the lash?  Thanks

Answer
Hello papejazzer,
Yes, there is a sequence. As follows:
#1 cyl TDC compression stroke.
Adjust intake valves on 1,2,5, & 7
Adjust exhaust valves on 1,3,4, & 8

Then rotate the crankshaft one turn to the TDC mark, which will put cyl 6 at TDC compression stroke. (#1 will be TDC exhaust stroke)
Adjust intake valves 3,4,6, & 8
Adjust exhaust valves on 2,5,6, & 7

The lifters don't need primed. For each one you are adjusting, back off the adjuster nut till there is loose play in the push rod. Then tighten it to where the play just stops, ie it will be hard to rotate the pushrod with a light pinch. Then from that point, tighten the nut an additional one full turn.

That's it. Straight from Mitchell Manual.

By the way, the valve arrangement is E-I-I-E-E-I-I-E, FRONT TO REAR, ON BOTH BANKS.
(Actually, if you look at it, it is from rear to front also, since the heads are interchangable.)

Good luck,
Van
