Chevrolet Repair: El Camino question..., generator light, chevrolet el camino

Question
Howdy!
I've got a 1979 Chevrolet El Camino (350 with a 4 barrel carb).  It's in pretty decent shape, though it hasn't been run in about a year.
I cranked it up, and it runs well...but the GENERATOR light was on.  I took the generator (alternator) out and went to an AutoZone, where they tested it and told me that it was fine.  So I know it's not the generator/alternator.
I wonder if there's a short somewhere, and the light is registering incorrectly...am going to try and trace it back and see.
Any other advice you could give me?  I'd like to start using this vehicle, but don't want to get left stranded because of a dead battery.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
Warm regards,
David Gardner

Answer
Did you test the alternators output voltage and amperage when it IS installed on your vehicle.

IF the alternator has been CHANGED at any time, There are 2 possible alternators that are DIFFERENT depending upon IF your vehicle has a dash LIGHT or a dash GAGE and they are NOT interchangeable.

test it ON the vehcile and let me know.
