Chevrolet Repair: 96 Suburban starter-electrical problem, rodent problems, chevy suburban

Question
This is a revision of a previous email!
I have a '96 chevy suburban. Recently, while driving, the starter would engage for a split second. At the same time, the transmission indicator lights on the column began malfunctioning, showing the tranny to be in a different gear than it was actually in. Also the driver air bag light was coming on and off. Most lately, the starter began remaining engaged when starting, then would engage when the key was turned only to the 'on' position. I replaced the ignition switch, but it still did the same thing. After sitting for one day, everything began working normally again. I'm stumped!

Answer
Hi James,
The ignition switch is what I would suspect also, but if it is new, the solenoid might possibly be sticking.
Another possibility is some wires in the steering column or harness rubbed or chewed bare and shorting to each other. Do you have rodent problems?
