Chevrolet Repair: Can I swap a 3.1 with a 3.8, electrical harnesses, chevy monte carlo

Question
I own a 1995 chevy monte carlo with a 3.1 efi motor. Can I swap that motor with a newer (02-04) monte carlo 3.8 (supercharger preferred, but still ok without)? If possible, is there any modifcations that need to be done in order for it to feet.

Answer
In a BEEN THERE, DONE THAT several times over the years, I must tell you truthfully that you are in for a MAJOR undertaking and if you do NOT have electrical schematics for BOTH vehicles, I STRONGLY suggest that you do NOT attempt this type of swap.

First off, The computers are DIFFERENT.

Second is that even though the computer electrical harnesses from the 3.1 will fit into the 3.8 computer, The electrical harnees wire locations within the electrical connectors are TOTALLY wired differently.

EXAMPLE:

On the 3.1 engine, The electrical connector wire location in the plug may be a BLUE wire at terminal designation A1.

On the 3.8 engine, The electrical connector wire location in the plug may be a GREEN wire at terminal designation A1.

You would have to trace each and every wire in ALL of the electrical harnesses and match them to the schematic for the 3.8 engine.

I have done 3 of these kind of swaps and you are looking at many many hours of tedious time comsuming work of checking EVERY wire going TO and FROM the ECM.

Have you made sure that the 3.8 engine will align and bolt up to the 3.1's transmission ?.

I am going to tell it to you straight out, FORGET about taking on this major task as just ONE wire out of place and you will DESTROY numerous electrical components as well as the ECM. It is just plain to RISKY to try.

You can make your own decision, But I STRONGLY suggest that you do NOT attempt it.
