Chevrolet Repair: alternator and exsaust problem, chevy enthusiasts, chevy pickup

Question
I have took a 94 chevy pickup and stuck an 98 ls1
in it.My alt. is not charging the battery,the brown wire from the alt,suposed to go to the indicater light on stock instrument panel,i am using different gauges.is the brown wire suposed to be hot when the key is on.I am also needing hedders for the ls1,but fitted to the 94 chevy pickup.

Hello Brandon.
Hot with ignition on. The light provided initial excitation, but ignition will do it also.
