Chevrolet Repair: starting problem, tank unit, old tank

Question
92 chevy 3/4 ton pickup  2 wheel drive  350 engine
periodically will not start.  cranks fine, but has no spark and fuel pump doesn't run.  Problem is almost always with a cold engine.  Often will start in a few hours or after towing to garage.(but not always)  Has had at least 5 new ignition modules, a computer, a fuel pump, 2 new additional grounds, new connectors on module plug.   Nothing has lasted over 2 months.  Has been ongoing for about a year now.
Mechanics always say it starts before they can run it down.

Answer
Hi John,
I would be checking to see if battery voltage is getting to the connector near the gas tank.If voltage is getting there, but the pump isn't running, we are close.

Then I would remove and clean the ground wire from the truck side of that connector.

You had the pump replaced....was that a COMPLETE tank unit, or was it just the pump, out of the box, installed on the old tank unit?

I have a kid up the street with the same truck, and we had his pump unit out three times before I noticed the rusty rivets on the wire connections inside the tank unit, connecting to the outside plug connector. They were loose, and they need to carry the power through the connection.
The orriginal problem was never the pump. It was always the loose rivets.

Of course if yours was all replaced, probably shoots that down.

But if it indeed doesn't have spark at the same time, and you are sure the pump isn't running, I would check the ignition switch.  It is adjustable, or could be worn out.
