Pontiac Repair: 1995 Pontiac Check Engine Light, obd system, odb ii

Question
I have a 1995 Pontiac Sunfire which, besides age, is running just fine.  But, I am now having a symptom where the Check Engine Light comes on about a mile or two down the road on my way to work.  It does not seem to come on at other times.  I thought I had it diagnosed to only coming on when the pavement was wet due to a rain or while it was raining.  But, I have now had 2 days where it has come on without wetness on the pavement.  I can drive to lunch or drive home and the CEL does not come on at all.  It seems to only be this one piece of road where I travel for work.  It is while I start going up a hill, but that is about all I can see which is "different" from other driving conditions.  Gas mileage appears to be fine too.

I have tried to go to Autozone but they are unable to read the codes as it has a ODB II connector but the software is only from 1996 forward.  I saw another of your postings stating that even though there is a OBD II connector, the 1995 Sunfire still has the OBD and cannot store codes.  Does this mean I cannot have the dealer  diagnose this unless the light is constantly on?

Any other ideas you have on the CEL going on and off would be greatly appreciated!  {and, I have checked the gas cap several times  :-) }

Answer
Hi Logan
On a 1995 the gas cap will not be an issue 96 and up ir can. your 95 is an OBD system old connector 96 and up is OBD II. your guess is as good as mine as to what the code is for try a different auto parts store that has the old OBD connetor code reader. one though is this car had a recall for the engine control module you may want to call a dealer and give them your VIN # and see if the recall was done or not. It had to do with engine control module corrosion in the the module it's self and to the wire harness that could be the key to the wetness issue but then again maybe not. with out knowing what the code is for it's just plain guessing... you can try to flash the code by jumping the terminals a to b in the OBD DLC connector with a paper clip and then turn the key on the lamp will start to flash codes out 12 first 3 times then any other codes will come after that. it will flash pause and flash flash that is a "12" and so on.. good luck :)
