Chevrolet Repair: high pitched squeak, rear disc brakes, gravel roads

Question
Dear Van,
Recently my 98 Dodge Van (which only got 20,000 miles on it so far since we only use it for long trip) has been making a high pitched squeak. It sounds like from the rear right back brake. It only makes the sound when you are "not" using the brakes. The minute any pressure is used on the brakes the sound goes away. It only makes a sound when the car is moving. Speed does seem to effect the noise.

The mechnics told us the pads are not worn but glazed. One dealer told us we need to change the pads and two other shops told us there is no safety issues to worry about and no need to chnage anything.
We very much appreciate your advice on this.
Best,

Ellen

Answer
Hello Ellen,
By pads, I assume you have rear disc brakes on it. If so, the backing plate is not really a part of the structure of the brakes, but more of a sirt deflector, and air director for cooling. It is very light, subject to bending, and what I have found is, if you drive on gravel roads, a small piece of gravel can get cought in it, and rub against the rotor.
I have also seen where the edge of the rotor actually rubs the plate, which shows up as a shiny spot on it, but the rotor needs to be removed to see it. It can easily be tapped and bent back away...it just needs to be found, and doesn't hurt anything, other than the noise.

Goog luck,
Van
