Chevrolet Repair: Iginition switch releasing the shifter lever, chevy cavilier, t power

Chevy Cavilier 1994 2.2 4cyl. ....Having a problem with the the hand column lever. After the car is started I am unable to get it out of park. I have to put it in the start position with out turning the iginition over to start it; I have to either move it out of park into neutral or hold the lever button in while staring the car. What could possibly be causing this?

Hi Mari, This sounds like  you have bad ignition switch. If there isn't power to the solenoid to release the shifter in the run position you will not be able to move the shifter. This power comes from the ignition switch and I have replace this switch often.
