Chevrolet Repair: capriceclassic, chevy caprice classic, chevy caprice

Question
Hi Van, I Got A 1988 Chevy Caprice-classic And I Wanted To Know What Would Cause The Car To Blow A Big Puffy Of Smoke When I First Crank The Engine. It Has A V8 5.0l 4 Bbl Carb. installed And The Manual Tells You To Start A Cold Engine: You Must Push The Pedal To The Floor Slowly Release And Crank, Which I Do Every time And I Let car Warm Up For About 4-5 Minutes Every Morning, Also I Had Spark Plugs Replaced Not To Long Ago, Air Filter, Breather Element, Oxygen Sensor, and New Radiator.

Answer
Hello Ahmad,
It is probably the intake valve guide seals having some oil run down the stems while it is sitting, and that gets sucked in and burned when you start the car.
That was a common problem with Chevy engines for years.
You could try just lightly pressing the throttle part way down, and see if that helps. It could be just the initial shot of gas, and the choke adding a richer than necessary mixture to start.
If it starts ok, and smokes less, just do that.
