Chevrolet Repair: 1994 Beretta with broken timing chain., valve damage, timing chain

Question
The timing chain on my '94 Beretta 2.2 liter broke at 106k miles.  Is this normal?  Is this engine an "interference" or "free-wheeling" design?  What is the proabability of valve damage.  Is a compression check sufficient to determine or rule out any valve damage?  What, if any, other problems should I be looking for?

Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hello, Normal for the chain to break, no, but it happens. The valves should be OK as long as there isn't a ton of build up of carbon on the valves and pistons. I would just install a new chain and guides and start it up. I'm sure it will be fine.

Let me know how you make out
