Chevrolet Repair: power steering on a 97 silverado 4X4, silverado 4x4, power steering pump

Question
Van, I have a 97 Silverado 4X4 with AC. My problem is the steering feels like it grabs going around a corner but then will all of a sudden, let loose. But if I turn the wheel back and forth in the driveway it won't catch at all.

Answer
Hello Mark,
You need to look at what supplies the power assist. If it is a regular vacuum booster for the brakes, then a loose belt on the steering pump may be all it is.
But I think you have Hydroboost brakes, which get their power assist from the power steering pump. The pressure goes from the pump, to the hydro brake booster, then on to the steering gear, and back to the pump.
Applying the brakes may be using the pressure, and robbing the steering.
There is a priority system in there.
You may be able to correct it by increasing the idle speed, but check the belt for slipping also, as well as fluid level.Experiment with it to see if it only happens while the brakes are being applied.
