Chevrolet Repair: 4x4, transfer case lever, rear driveshaft

Question
I just bought a 1978 chevy 4x4 and it states that it is a full time 4 wheel drive and i can not figure out how to use the transfer case. Did chevy make a full time 4x4 in 1978 and how does it work?

Answer
Hi Henry,
They did, and it really worked quite well.
What the transfer case lever does, is actually lock the front driveshaft and the rear driveshaft where they both turn, which would allow one driveshaft to actually be removed, and the other axle would move the vehicle.
This helps when one wheel is off the ground, like high centering, etc.
Otherwise, all four wheels work with each other through differential action.
