Chevrolet Repair: engine or tranny surging, foot on the gas, 8l

ihave a 1985 camaro,2.8L,v6.while driving my car it acts like it is either surging or trying to shift from drive to over drive,also the check engine light comes on ,but only for a few seconds and then it goes off.sometimes the car quits acting up and sometimes it doesnt.how can i find out what it is.

Hi Sabrena, Try this while your driving the car and it is doing this surging thing. Press on the brake pedal just a little bit,enough to make the brake lights come on but not stop the car. Be sure not to move the foot on the gas pedal while pressing the brake pedal,keep it steady. Does the surging stop? Let me know...
