Chevrolet Repair: 1966 chevy pick-up wont start, starter checks, combustible mixture

Question
Hi Barry,

I have a 1966 chevy pick-up with a 350 engine. It's been running however I recently went to start it, it would crank and fire but will not keep running past the initial fireing. I tried new plugs it has an electronic module for points which are set to specs, coil checks out, battery is charged, starter checks out, however I'm getting some engine kick back when cranking the engine over, and there is some wear on the fly wheel teeth. carb seems ok and gas seems to be getting to the carb, I even tried some starter fluid. I'm at my wits end. My instincts tell me its in the timeing or ignition, But I don't know what else to check It has recently been to a mechanic for tune up and was running great but sat for a couple of months and now this.

Do you know any body who would like to buy a 66 Chevy short and narrow? hehe :)

I'll appreciate any help you can give......

Thanks a bunch...........Jerry

Answer
An engine needs 3 things to run, 1, a combustible mixture, 2, compression, and, 3, proper ignition timing, 1 or more is missing! From your description, starts but won't stay running tells me it's a fuel/carb. problem. Needle/seat, float, fuel pump, and filter(s) should be checked for proper function, Good Luck!
