Chevrolet Repair: S-10 Interior Lights, shutting the doors, rear view mirror

Question
Van,  I have a 97 Chevrolet S-10, LS that I bought used about a year ago with 80,000 miles.  Recently, the interior lights will not turn off.  These include the dome light, that is located over the rear window.  There are lights on the rear view mirror, I guess came as part of the LS package.  I have tried repeatly shutting the doors to get the lights to go out.  They have quit shutting off.  I have had to drive with the lights on and then when I get home they remain on.  I have a battery charger hooked up now, because the battery went dead because the lights drained the power.  What can be done to correct this problem?

Answer
Hi Mike,
Looks like every door handle, each door latch, separate light switches, and the dimmer on the dash near the headlight switch are all tied to the light control module, and any of them can keep the module turned on.
They are all powered by the same fuse...#2, courtesy. It also does the cig lighter.
There is also the possibility of a remote keyless entry causing the lights to stay on.
To correct the problem, disconnecting each of the switches till the light goes out to isolate the bad switch, then replacing it would probably be the fix, but it can be a lot of work. But that would be the cheapest.
If all the door latch and handles are disconnected, and the lights are still on, it could be the module.
There is also the remote possibility that one of the wires to one of the door switches is shorted to ground, which would act the same as the door open. That can be hard to track down.
A dealership may be the best bet, if they have someone who will systematically test items, rather than just guessing and replacing parts, all of which you pay for.
Good luck,
Van
