Chevrolet Repair: light truck timing/exhaust, compression stroke, isuzus

Question
i have a 1992 isuzu 1/2 ton truck, it has a 2.3 ltr. engine. i've just replaced the head and put on a new timing belt-my question is: should my exhaust valve{#1}-be opened or closed when i set my timing? appreciate the help!

Answer
Hi Ron,
I don't know anything about Isuzus, but if you are timing on the #1 cylinder, TDC, of the compression stroke, which is when it should be firing, both valves should be closed. Turn the crankshaft exactly one revolution.
The opposite cylinder in the firing order should have the exhaust valve just finishing closing, and the intake valve just starting to open.
Opposite= if firing order is 1-3-4-2...opposite is 1 & 4.
