Motorcycle Repair: Yamaha 80 gas tank, complete machine shop, road model

Question
I was given a 73 Yamaha 80 to fix up for the kids. It hasn't run for years. To start I would like to clean the gas tank. It is rusty with old gas inside. What is the best method to clean the in side. I'll repair the carb. and oil & fuel lines next. Also there is no key can I jump some wires or do i need to replace the switch? I have some mech. exp. and access to a complete machine shop. This project will help the kids learn to be mech. inclined I hope. Dan

Answer
Dan,
There is a product made, I can't remember the brand, that makes a 2 part epoxy coating for rusted tank interiors. You can usually find the kit at a good bike shop. If I remember the kit was about $20-30. Just read the instructions carefully and you should be good to go. The only other option you have is to find another in good shape.  I guess this is a road model w/ keyed ignition switch.  If you dismantle the ignition switch and separate the switch from the lock cylinder you should be able to discern what wires need to contact each other at "position II".  Typically on Yamahas of that age the ground is blue and the other leads in the switch; red/yellow, red and brown.
