Answer
Hi Rick,
There are three wires to the alternator which should be checked out for continuity. The black/gray is connected to the battery and should show about 12 volts, the same as the battery.
Dark green/orange wire should show 12 volts also, but only when the engine is running, otherwise it should be 0 volts. The dark green wire is connected to the powertrain control module which is mounted next to the power distribution box under the hood and has two plugs mounted on its top, and dark green wire is attached to pin 8 of the front plug. So check that you have continuity of that wire between the pin 8 of the plug and the other end of that wire at the alternator.
If those check out then you would do well to get a fault code readout using a plug-in fault code reader which can be often gotten for free at a nationwide auto parts store (e.g. Autozone). Let me know what 4-digit numbers are revealed if any and we'll go from there.
If one of the wires that I suggested that you check doesn't appear to be connected let me know and I can tell you the details about it.
It is either the wiring or a problem inside the powertrain control module which is what controls the voltage output (and thus the warning light) of the alternator if it isn't doing its job.
