Question
QUESTION: I got this van from a friend for cheap not running. He just replaced the fuel pump and thermosat shortly after replacing the thermostat it stop running while he was driving it. It has sat only one month has no spark from what I know. Ive replaced the disributer cap and rotor also the fuel filter and the auto shutoff relay. I can still not get it to fire up motor does turn over thought what should I do next im thinking about replacing coil but dont want to keep replacing parts I dont need to where should I start next im at a loss.

ANSWER: Hi Pete,
The best thing to do is a fault code readout by means of the ignition key, turn it: "on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch the check engine light, which remains "on", to see it begin to flash, pause, flash, etc. Count the number of flashes before each pause. Then repeat the process to be sure you get a consistent repeatable set of flash counts. Tell me the counts in order of appearance and we'll go from there.
Please read the PS below and respond to it.

QUESTION: Ok the fault code readout after I did it  times is 3-4-1-5-5

Answer
Hi Pete,
The 3 count is likely actually a 1 followed by 2 after a pause. That 12 code simply says that recently the battery was disconnected which I assume is the case. The 55 code means "end of code readout".
The 41 code is pointing toward the generator field coil circuit not functioning. Now that circuit needs the 12v output of the autoshutdown relay or that code will occur. When you first turn the key to 'run' postion do your hear the fuel pump in the tank run for about 1 second or not? The autoshutdownh relay is supposed to close for about 1 second when you turn key to 'run'.
Because you don't have spark that would also suggest an issue with the asd relay as the ignition coil also needs the 12v output of the ASD relay as does the fuel pump. I would begin by checking out the dark green/orange wire at the spark coil to see whether it shows 12v for about 1 second when a helper turns the key to the run position, and then when the helper cranks over the engine does the 12v return?
Let me know whether you get any 12v at all on that wire, just for the 1 second, or for both the 1 second and when cranking.
If you don't get 12v on that wire at all, then check the red/white wire at the autoshutdown relay which should show 12v all the time as it comes from the battery.
When you write back tell me whether you have the 2.5 or the 3.0L engine.
Thanks for the rating and nomination. You can do both again for each response that I send you.
Thanks,
