I wonder whether your brother updated the engine control system or not? Between '84 and '87 the control computer was in two parts, a power module in the engine compartment and a logic module in the cabin, and to gain an insight into your problems you would need a Chrysler DRB-I (C-4805) fault code reader. If by chance he upgraded the controller to '88 or later then you can get the fault codes either with a DRB-II code reader or just use the ignition switch to get a readout. In the original vehicle the connector port for the code reader was a 6-pin black rectangular socket located near the left strut tower in the engine compartment. Ideally your brother has wired to that port in the '84 Cherokee.
Try doing this with the ignition key: "on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch the instrument cluster to see whether the power loss/check engine light (which remains 'on') begins to flash, pause, flash, etc. If not then probably the earlier system is still in use and you will want to get a code readout at a Chrysler dealer/shop that can do that with a DRB-I or its equivalent. If the light begins to flash then count the number of flashes before each pause; then repeat the process to assure an accurate set of flash counts. Tell me what the counts are.
Getting a fault code readout is the way to start diagnosis of any engine problem and you can do that locally, in Montana. Let me know when you get the two-digit fault code number(s). Without a diagnostic readout all you can do is throw parts at it which is very expensive and frustrating.

QUESTION: Thank you for the input, nothing has worked for me, this is why I need an expert and am willing to travel to wherever he is, I have tried all dealers, non will help, please get me a tech that can and will do this job, I am willing to pay for the name if need be.

Again, do you have any idea about which 'vintage' engine controller is installed? Will you try the ignition switch approach that utilizes the power loss/check engine light? If not, then try joining and asking the same question at theChryslerlebaronclub. There are 2000 members there, some of whom must be living near where you are.
