Chrysler Repair: Malfunction indicator light: 06 T&C, malfunction indicator light, digit code number

Question
I have a 2006 Chrysler Town & Country minivan with around 80,000 miles on it.  Recently my malfunction indicator light went on and is staying on.  It is not blinking, just a solid light.  Any suggestions as to what is causing this?  Do I need to go to a dealership to find out or is there a cheaper way to find out what the problem is?

Answer
Hi Joyce,
The light being 'on' means that the engine controller has noticed a fault of some sort and put a 4-digit code number in its memory that describes the problem. One way to get that code is to use the ignition switch turning it "on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch the odometer window of the speedometer to notice the mileage reading will be replaced by a 4-digit number preceded by a P. Tell me that number(s) and we'll go from there to solve it.
Another way is to use a plug-in code reader to get the number and some nationwide auto parts stores will do that for free, such as Autozone. Finally, an independent shop will do the readout for about $40. But let's try the key first.
