Chrysler Repair: 2000 town and country transmission, rear drive shaft, 4 digit numbers

Question
QUESTION: I have a 2000 town and country AWD. I just purchased it. The transfer case was cracked due to going over a large rock. I replaced it. Changed the fluid, filter. The transmission shift solenoid had a small leak between the plastic front and the aluimum piece. The crush preventer bushings on two holes needed to be very slightly filed so the rubber seal would work rite. I put it back together very gently. Everything worked great after I reset the computer. The problem, after about 200 miles of driving I got gas and when I went to leave the car went into drive but would only mov 8-12 min. forward or back I turned off the car and sat a couple minutes and put it in drive and went. No noise or abnormal drive or sound. The next morning I went to go to work and it did the same thing, but this time it wont go even after thrning it off and trying agion. PLEASE HELP.

Thank you in advance
Edward

ANSWER: Hi Edward
Get a fault code readout of the transmission controller. Try a self-readout first using the ignition switch:"on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch the odometer window to see if the mileage is replaced by any 4-digit numbers in the 700's or 1700's. Let me know what they are.
Have you checked the fluid level in the transmission? That being too low might prevent any movement.
Otherwise a code readout is really the best way to know what to do.

QUESTION: The fluid is fine. The car will go into all gears and will engage rite, but when I go into drive or reverse it will only go 8-12in. forward or back. Then at that point it stops like you put it in park. The rear drive shaft is removed. I even jacked up the rear to make sure the rear end was not causing the problem.

Answer
Hi Edward.
I am getting the picture...the issue is likely involved with the power transfer unit, correct. as that was where the damage occurred? I notice that in the 20-page section of this unit in my 2002 manual it states that: "If the ring gear and pinion, any tapered roller bearings, case, covers, or pinion carrier fail the entire unit must be replaced." Do any of those items appear to have been damaged?
The manual pages describe adjustments and seal replacements only. Do you have those pages available to you? If not, I can photocopy and postal mail them to you, or possibly copy them from an '04 manual I have on CD and attach those to an email but it is a somewhat tedious and time-consuming process to do that.
The only other thing I can imagine is that for some reason the park pawl in the transmission is stuck in the park position. You could drop the pan and observe for that possibility. I can send you the page or so that shows that mechanism by email.
Either let me know your email address (but don't use the @ symbol, instead us 'at' or the address will be erased) or tell me a postal mailing address. The cost of copying the pages and mailing them would be about six 44-cent stamps which you can send to me after you get the pages.
