Chrysler Repair: LIMP MODE: 89 New Yorker, vehicle speed sensor, speed sensors

Question
QUESTION: EMAIL , AT INSTEAD OF @ , AS YOU MENTIONED IN A PREVIOUS ANSWER TO ANOTHER PERSON.  BUT, MY EMAIL ADDRESS DOES HAVE THE "@" SYMBOL .  YOU SAID YOU WOULD NEED THE "AT" IN LIEU OF @ .TO SEND WIRE DIAGRAMS.  I WANT TO THOROUGHLY INSPECT ALL CONTROL WIRING TO TRANSAXLE, ESPECIALLY GROUND WIRES !!!  SOME OF THE WIRE ARE UNDER THE BATTERY BOX NEAR THE CRUISE CONTROL VACUUM CONTROL, ALSO UNDER BATTERY BOX , NOT EXACTLY A GOOD LOCATION !  ACID DROPPINGS CAN AFFECT WIRES. CORROSION !  NEED THAT WIRE DIAGRAM.  WILL ALSO GET CODE PULLED AT PARTS STORE, THEY WILL DO ANYTHING FOR ME, GREAT REPOR W/ THESE GUYS I DEAL WITH . I NEED TO HAVE ANY ROUGE CODES REMOVED ANYWAY, MEMORY CAN CAUSE ISSUES IF NOT DEALT WITH ACCORDINGLY ! THANKS ROLAND, LOOK FORWARD TO YOUR KNOWLEDGABLE ANSWER !  I RATE YOU 10+

ANSWER: Hi Ken,
The diagrams are on hard copy so I will need to xerox and postal mail them to you. I will get you the pages for the electronic transaxle. Let me know your postal mailing address.
Feel free to do another 'rate/nominate' action as there is no restriction on that by Allexperts.

QUESTION: YES, ODOMETER , CONVENTIONAL/MECHANICAL,  NOT DIGITAL !  JUST NEEDED YOUR BLESSING ON THAT,  THOUGHT DIFFERANTLY WHEN ASTG FORUM CONVERSATION MENTIONED ODOMETER/SPEEDO COULD MALFUNCTION IF INPUT,OUTPUT SENSORS GO BAD. THIS WAS MY FIRST TRANSAXLE W/ CHRYSLER, IT EVEN SCARED LEE IACCOCA !!!  "ULTRA DRIVE "  , MORE LIKE ULTRA NIGHTMARE !

ANSWER: Hi Ken,
Yes, the '89 3.0L diagrams show there to be a distance sensor on that transmission (in addition to the input and output rotational speed sensors used for transmission shifting control process). That being the case, and knowing about the way the conventional speedo/odo units worked during that time frame leads me to believe that you will indeed find that 20-tooth plastic gear inside the unit to have a tooth missing. The distance sensor (also called the vehicle speed sensor) appears to have been used up until the end of the C-body vehicles in 1993 and after that in other bodies that carried the 3.0L engine through the '95 model year. The transmission input and output speed sensors refer to shaft rotational speeds not vehicular road speed, though of course there is a contant relationship between the two 'output' sensors, the sensors are for different purposes. With the advent of the LH body in '93 with its 3.3 of 3.5L engines the speedo/odo was then driven by the 'output speed sensor'

PPS: I will copy 16 pages and postal mail them today. If you would be so kind as to send me back 5 44-cent stamps to cover my costs that would be most appreciated.

QUESTION: JUMPED INTO LIMP MODE AGAIN, W/ CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON, HOWEVER, NEED TO FIND A OBD I SCANNER TO PULL CODE, WAS TOLD CHECK ENGINE LIGHT HAS TO BE ON, TO PULL CODE, WHY DON'T I BELIEVE THAT ?   I'M GOING TO TRY PULLING CODE WITH IGNITION KEY METHOD, PER HAYNES MANUAL.  HOPE THAT WORKS ! WOULD A HOT ENGINE CAUSE LIMP MODE TO REACT ?  ALSO, IF TRANS PUMP LEAKS, INTERNALLY, WOULD THAT CONTRIBUTE ?  STARTING TO THINK INTERNAL PROBLEMS @ THIS STAGE, NOT IN THE MOOD FOR THAT, FEELING MY PAIN ?  I'LL INSPECT ALL WIRING PER MY PLAN, GO FROM THERE. WISH IT WAS A TORQUEFLITE !!! NOW THERES A TRANNY !   BY THE WAY, ROLAND , MY PRIDE AND JOY IS MY 1987 BUICK GRAND NATIONAL, BOUGHT IT NEW, STILL LOOKS AND RUNS THE SAME WAY TOO !!!

Answer
Hi Ken,
No the fault codes are stored regardless, and the check engine light probably would not be 'on' for a transmission fault code in any case. The light is mainly when there are serious pollution issues. The ignition switch self-readout only reveals engine fault codes, not transmission codes. The wiring diagrams I sent to you today shows that there is black colored 4-pin socket to the right of the steering column and that would be the way to get the trans fault code(s), which will be 2-digit numbers. There is an engine code diagnostic socket in the engine compartment but that is not where you will get the trans codes from. I wonder about mating a DRB to the 4-pin socket however because I hadn't noticed such a socket as part of the DRB-II unit that I have. You may have to try a dealer or a good diagnostic shop that has a snap-on scanner and that particular plug as part of its tools.  Let me know what you learn, Ken. You didn't mention the mileage on the New Yorker, but the A604 trans and its successors are known to have problems above 100K miles.
You can do a 'rate/nominate' for this answer if you wish.
